The U.S. Capitol in snow.

Washington, D.C., is back in full swing after the holidays with a new President, a new Congress, but an old fiscal year. Last December, Congress chose to extend temporary government funding and kick the can to finalize FY2025 appropriations. Current government funding runs until midnight on Friday, March 14, 2025.

The delay means that the final agreement on FY25 funding will be at least five months late and will overlap with the start of negotiations for FY26 appropriations. Service providers and young people should be prepared to speak to the importance and value of federal funding in their communities over the coming weeks and months as the federal funding fights for next year will soon begin in earnest, likely even before last year’s fight has concluded.

Many nominees have yet to be fully confirmed:

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
