Youth Transitioning Out Of Foster Care Facing Multiple Barriers

Over 400 Kansas young people are preparing to transition or “age out” of foster care this year. The Kansas Department for Children and Families and the Kansas Department of Revenue have teamed up to help these young adults obtain ID’s.   “Right now we have 422 youth in foster care who are preparing to transition into adulthood,” Theresa Freed, DCF Director of Communications, said. During fiscal year 2014, 331 youth aged out of foster care. Many of them did not have the necessary photo identification to make the life transition. Photo IDs are required for enrolling in school, applying for employment and joining the military. Yet many children in foster care do not have a photo ID. Click here to read more.
