Working with LGBTQ youth– how far we’ve come…and miles to go before we sleep.

LGBTQ youth face a number of unique challenges in the criminal and juvenile justice systems.  What is it about our policies, and our own reactions to these youth, that makes them invisible when they most need support?

About Mykel

Mykel Selph is a criminal and juvenile justice professional with expertise in gender-responsive principles, the treatment of the LGBTQI population, sexual safety, and the intersection of race and culture in relation to justice system reform.  She has worked with multiple correctional agencies throughout the country on these issues, including her time as the Director of the Office of Girls and Gender at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.  Mykel’s personal and professional mission is to create safe spaces for ongoing dialogue about social justice issues that are nonjudgmental and empathic.   As she says: “behavioral change is enhanced when we create an environment based on safety, dignity, and respect”.  She believes that dialogue is an opportunity for us to acknowledge our differences and begin learning to peacefully coexist.

About Connection

Connection isn’t just an event, it’s an experience. Each year the Connection event brings together thought leaders from the youth service field to make unexpected connections that break through the status quo.  A refreshing line up of brilliant speakers challenge practice-as-usual and provide participants with the opportunity to learn about and discuss key issues in a relaxed, creative atmosphere. Our innovative format means that you don’t just listen to thought-provoking presentations and fresh ideas, you have the chance to discuss and build upon them. Our broad, multi-sector network means that you can expect the opportunity to talk with familiar colleagues, reconnect where you may have lost touch, and get connected with those outside your network.   Even our nontraditional space provides inspiration to move, think, and speak freely. Think LGBTQ youth need to be seen?  Think Mykel needs to be heard?  Make sure she is, and send this to a colleague.
