Human Trafficking Awareness Month Is Coming In January
Many of us are not aware that human trafficking happens every day in our country - the extent to which this occurs and the fact that many victims are minors or began their trafficking experience as a minor. These facts are difficult to understand. But action is needed and action can’t occur without understanding. Though every month is awareness month for those supporting victims/survivors, January is nationally recognized as a month dedicated as a call to action for all of us to better understand and to help others to do so.
There are several resources that will be helpful as you develop your plan to participate in this nationwide effort to help people understand the complexities of human trafficking:
- Shining Light on the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: A Toolkit to Build Understanding provides information on a variety of topics related to human trafficking with a specific focus on mentoring for commercial sexual exploitation victims.
- Raising Awareness of Sex Trafficking of Youth in the US is an Upworthy collaboration with Youth Collaboratory and the Center for Combatting Human Trafficking at Wichita State University.
- The Blue Campaign is the unified voice for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) efforts to combat human trafficking. Working in collaboration with law enforcement, government, non-governmental and private organizations, the Blue Campaign strives to protect the basic right of freedom and to bring those who exploit human lives to justice.
Human trafficking is an issue that touches every community, including cities, suburbs, and rural towns, but there is something each of us can do to help prevent it.
Watch for opportunities throughout the January to learn and to share information!
