Fall 2024 Public Policy Update
At the end of September, deep into the midst of a tense national election, Congress passed a 49-page continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government open and funded through December 20, 2024. Members of Congress then left town to campaign and won't return to DC until November 12.
This sets up a dramatic fight during an already jam-packed lame-duck session of Congress in late November and early December. The House and Senate will grapple with several must-pass pieces of legislation, such as the Farm Bill (which governs SNAP benefits that include programs for people experiencing homelessness), additional funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the annual National Defense Authorization Act. These bills are in addition to sorting out funding for the remainder of the FY2025 fiscal year.
